It looks like the Olsen sisters are getting back to basics when it comes to their fall collection for Elizabeth and James. However, don’t let the word basic fool you. Their recent offering is anything but.
The shirt dress got an update with the addition of the exaggerated sleeves that accommodate the year’s biggest fashion trend, while the classic trench coat was redesigned with a slightly asymmetrical hem and military-style buttons. These two items weren’t the only staples the duo tweaked though. Even the little black dress was given a makeover when the label added a drop waist to the silhouette and styled it with a crisp, white blouse.
Although Elizabeth and James stayed true to its roots with minimal design and styling, the greater attention to detail, expansion of technique and use of color show just how much the label has grown since its launch in 2007. Cherry red was strategically placed on knitwear, and a wool coat was even painted in a bold orange hue.
Style mavens looking to give a serious update to their basics should take note of this recent collection. The label’s fall selection is so beautifully-crafted in an understated way that even I’m considering the idea of hanging up my favorite black, wool coat and replacing it with a tangerine-hued option instead.
