The Chic, Yet Cheap Find. Summer Mules

ASOS Pointy Toe Mules

Of all the footwear trends to make their way onto our feet this summer, mules have honestly came as a bit of a surprise. With their bulkier structure and need to be created in heavier materials, the shoe doesn’t exactly scream summer. However, almost every spring collection ( Proenza Schouler created a two-tone, pointy toe option that has me swooning) featured a variation of the shoe designs, which had me contemplating the power of this particular trend, and why it has been one that is lingering, while also transforming, for several seasons now.

The Accessory Report. Working on the Chain Gang

When it comes to the top handbag trend for spring 2016, becoming a member of the chain gang is the way to go. Yes, the chain strap handbags are already as much a closet staple as the little black dress. However, unlike their predecessors, this season’s offerings boast bold colors, exotic materials, and embellished adornments that allow the wearer to truly express their own personal style, and take that little black dress you’ve had in your closet to the next level.

The Accessory Report. Seeing Things Clearly

Along with chokers, kitten heels and mis-matched statement earrings, clear accessories are a trend to try this spring and summer. Though I have always been a bit skeptical of wearing anything transparent when it comes to fashion, top designers put my mind at ease after featuring luxe PVC adornments in their recent collections. Loewe featured chic plastic handbags and Maison Margiela topped his models with sophisticated sun hats in this durable material. However, the Simone Rocha rubber sandals that gave a serious nod to the iconic Jellies of my youth are what really got me excited to try this new, and always-evolving, trend.

New In. My Kind of Daydreamer Denim

One lesson we have learned when it comes to fashion, is that satire truly goes a long way. Right now, designers are borrowing a bit of comic relief from the 70s, and bringing patched up denim back into the the fashion stratosphere with their modern take on the trend. From mis-matched patches of denim at Tom Ford to a pair of DKNY jeans that resemble a DIY project (in the best way possible), and even emoji patches that reference the era that we currently live in, denim is getting a complete makeover this spring.

New In. Instant Sophistication

From open back sneakers to lace-ups sandals, and sophisticated mules, there is something for every style maven to enjoy in the footwear department this spring season.

However, I happen to have my eye on the pointy-toe, kitten heels that dominated the collections of Proenza Schouler, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Céline. The kitten heel has been a go-to of mine for several seasons, because it is comfortable and oh so sophisticated at the same time, and that combo is exactly what I need when I am simply donning a white tee and some of my favorite denim.

Details. Burgundy Is the New Black

When you are constantly swimming in a closet of all black, a reprieve from the color- however small that may be- can be much-welcomed. While perusing one of my favorite retailers for a new black bag, I stumbled across this little burgundy gem. The faux fur pom pom intrigued me, the clean lines excited me, and the thought of adding a little dose of color to my often all black winter ensembles completely inspired me.

Sure, it may just be a small step in the grand scheme of things, but one small step usually leads to another. Then, that step leads to a bigger step, and before you know it I may even be jumping on that color train this spring. (Or, at least taking a small ride- lol.)

Trend to Try. The Frayed Hem

If you are stuck somewhere between distressed denim (exposed knees included) and the darker, tailored jeans that often exude a prim and more proper stance, then frayed hems are definitely a trend to try this season.

A new take on distressed fashion debuted this fall when designers applied a new hemming technique to everything from tweed skirts to denim trenches. Now, frayed hems are taking over where fringe left off, and giving all of us style mavens a much-needed update to our current denim collection.

However, just because the edges of your jeans are a little undone, doesn’t mean that your ensemble will look completely haphazard. Simply think of this season’s frayed hem as a nod to your playful side- much like the the sneakers that dressed down so many power suits last season. Just remember to keep your styling simple, so that the playful adornment can truly shine in your look.
